Confession is good for the soul

When we think of confession we tend to think firstly of confessing our sins and faults. There is a place for this but there is a great deal of Scripture that teaches us to confess our identity in Christ, to confess that we are highly favoured by God and deeply loved by Him. Words are extremely powerful. Jesus said that our spoken words have the power to liberate or to condemn (Matthew 12:37).

We liberate ourselves by speaking the Scriptures concerning love, life, health, peace and prosperity, and generally speaking well of ourselves. In fact every promise God has ever made is a big yes in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20), and when we agree with the promises and start to confess them and speak them out the Holy Spirit has something to work with to bring them to pass in our lives and the lives of others.

We can also condemn ourselves by speaking out in a fault finding manner or being negative. Notice that God does not condemn us we condemn ourselves by the words we speak. God only wants to bring us a conviction to confess words of love instead of words of fear. Jesus said out of the overflow of our heart our mouth will speak (Matthew 12:34). Therefore the condition of our heart (our inner world, the core of who we are) is really the source of what comes out of our mouth.

If we decide to get into the habit of speaking the promises of God over ourselves then this is one important tool towards bringing healing to our hearts, and restoring a Godly image of ourselves. We can only love others out of the resource of God's love for us and we find a huge reservoir of His love in the promises He has given to us in the Scriptures.

I believe that simply taking 5-10 minutes a day to confess the promises of God out loud concerning your life as part of your devotional time will within one month bring a change, first in your own heart, and then in your outlook on life and your perception of everything around you. The promises of Scripture will then be used by the Holy Spirit to gradually, but noticeably, change circumstances in your life,

Confession really is good for the soul.
